e -ways of Self-Expression :Blogging

In this era of intense work pressure and busy time schedules, social life has taken a back seat. Nowadays, people are finding new ways or rather e – ways to get engaged into a social life. The internet users have discovered e-ways (read online ways or easy ways) like Blogging (websites like Blogger, Wordpress), Micro-blogging (Twitter, Google Buzz), social network updates (on Facebook ,Orkut ), online forums as their new channels of expression. Initially, people used to first meet and then interact whereas now, they first interact online and then fix social meetings indicating a clear paradigm shift in their approach to building a social life.

Now, for people to easily express themselves, they resort to their e-ways with micro-blogging and blogging being the most popular forms. There are 3 major reasons for the popularity of the e-ways – first, it provides for a platform with numerable features like uploading pictures, videos, commenting, counter-commenting on one dashboard (that act as figures of speech) where we can portray our creativity level, personality and the thinking process. Second, we can interact easily with people of the same interest levels. Finally, the scope of communication spans all the internet users in the world, in simple words – it’s a huge space for our social life to evolve.

Amazon cloud fails to amaze !!

The latest buzz that shook the technology market was the server outage faced by Amazon for a couple of days. The amazon cloud services that have been acquired by a host of social media websites like foursquare quora to portions of NY times and several silicon valley startups was a great setback, as the websites faced huge down times.

An enterprise cloud computing server is basically an online server that can be rented out (depending on the vendor's revenue model) to host a website, which saves on the CAPEX(capital expense) of acquiring the IT infrastructure and the OPEX (operating expense) to manage it over the years. But, this news has revealed the vulnerability of acquiring a cloud computing service for the various internet startups. The decision making now is a balance between security plus seamless service on one hand and the cost effectiveness on the other.

A better solution for acquiring cloud services for small internet startups can be :

1. To acquire a reliable enterprise solution from big boys like IBM, HP, Fujitsu...
2. There should be atleast 3 cloud servers from different vendors
- main server ( has to be a good vendor )
- alternate server
- backup server (can be compromised for bringing down the cost)

Because at the end of the day "Downtime is what brings your customers down !!"

The Need to GO GREEN !!

Globally, the concept of GREEN IT is more popular with the high level of awareness and education about the clean and green environment initiatives. India is a rapidly growing economy but even with its rampant carbon emissions India is not required to cut its emissions because of its ‘developing’ nation status. India accounts for 4% of the global carbon emissions. Some other facts that help us understand the criticality of taking constructive measures are in terms of:

Carbon footprint India ranks fourth in CO2 emissions, Road transport accounts for 10% of individual carbon footprints. Household wastes also contribute significantly.

E-waste E-waste is also lacking in proper management and disposal of industrial waste specially the e-waste that is derived from the electronics and IT hardware industries. As per a United Nations report, by 2020, India's e-waste from old computers will jump to an alarming rate of 500% from 2007 levels. Lack of government policy on e-waste is catalyzing the problem. E-wastes are currently recycled in a crude way by the informal unorganized sector that could potentially be a health hazard.

This highly depends on various macroeconomic factors like Government Regulations, Climate Policy and Energy Management protocols.

GREEN IT myth in India

India is the fifth largest generator of green-house gases (GHGs) in the world. With this global concern, Indian corporate leaders also aim to be good ‘environment citizens’, but have failed to justify the costs of going green except for the sake of going green or matching the industry trends. The major enabler to this myth is that the data center managers don’t relate themselves to the contribution of datacenter to the overall carbon footprint of the company as the power and cooling costs are a part of facility costs. It is important to factor the related costs of cooling the heat dissipated by the datacenter and also the power savings of using power efficient IT systems.

NASSCOM's green initiative defines 3 vectors of GREEN IT

This market perception poses a challenge to the IT vendors to sell their GREEN IT technology in a highly lucrative market like India. The macroeconomic policies play an important role in pushing the growth of GREEN IT market in India. The strategic approach for market penetration is to educate the clients about the importance of GREEN IT solutions and maintaining low carbon credits through energy efficient IT landscape. The market drivers, restraints and challenges have been identified to forecast the market potential in the upcoming post.
